Karuppu Review: Suriya Anchors an Emotional Courtroom Drama with Mythological Flair

Indian cinema has long blended mythology with contemporary social issues, and Karuppu attempts to continue that tradition by combining a courtroom drama with supernatural elements. Directed by RJ Balaji, the film marks an important release for Suriya after a series of commercial disappointments. While it succeeds in delivering emotional moments and compelling performances, it struggles to maintain consistency in its second half.

Storyline and Performances

The story follows Mattancherry Sukumaran (Indrans) and his daughter Binu (Anagha Maya), who travel from Kerala to Chennai for Binu’s liver transplant. Carrying 60 sovereigns of gold to fund the surgery, their hopes are shattered when the gold is stolen. Although police recover part of the jewellery, the legal process becomes another obstacle. Their case falls into the hands of Baby Kannan (RJ Balaji), a lawyer who manipulates the judicial system for personal gain. As Sukumaran loses hope, he turns to Vettai Karuppu, a mythical force that enters the courtroom disguised as a human to deliver justice.

Suriya delivers the film’s strongest performance. Whether portraying the divine Karuppu or his human counterpart Saravanan, he commands attention with confidence and charisma. His screen presence elevates several scenes, particularly during the courtroom confrontations. Indrans provides the emotional backbone of the film, portraying a desperate father with sincerity and restraint. His performance makes the family’s struggle believable and emotionally engaging.

RJ Balaji performs convincingly as Baby Kannan, balancing humour with the arrogance of a corrupt lawyer. However, his character lacks the menace expected from a central antagonist, reducing the overall tension. Trisha Krishnan delivers a respectable performance but is underutilized. Despite her chemistry with Suriya, her character receives limited development and leaves little lasting impact.

Screenplay and Technical aspects

The screenplay remains engaging throughout the first half, effectively building emotional investment without unnecessary diversions. The courtroom proceedings and social commentary on corruption keep the narrative focused. However, after the interval, the film loses some of its momentum. While Suriya’s supernatural avatar is entertaining, the transition between mythology and realism occasionally feels uneven. Certain emotional beats lose their effectiveness, and some songs interrupt the narrative rather than enhance it.

From a technical standpoint, Karuppu is well-crafted. The cinematography complements both the grounded courtroom sequences and the mythical elements, while Sai Abhyankkar’s background score significantly enhances the film’s emotional and action sequences. The music consistently supports the storytelling and becomes one of the film’s strongest technical assets.

Low Points

The film’s biggest weakness lies in its inconsistent antagonist and the imbalance between its supernatural themes and courtroom drama. At one point, Baby Kannan appears to overpower Karuppu, a development that feels inconsistent with the film’s own mythology. This weakens the narrative’s internal logic and slightly reduces the impact of the climax.

Despite its flaws, Karuppu remains an engaging watch. It delivers strong performances, emotional storytelling, and meaningful commentary on corruption within the judicial system. Although it falls short of becoming a truly memorable action fantasy, it succeeds as a courtroom drama driven by Suriya’s commanding performance.

Final Verdict

Karuppu is a solid mythical courtroom drama that benefits from Suriya’s screen presence, Indrans’ emotional performance, and an effective background score. While its second half loses some narrative balance, the film remains a worthwhile watch for audiences looking for a socially driven drama with mythological elements.
