Israel’s approval of limited Gaza force: A calculated manoeuvre?

The Israeli government has approved a highly constrained pilot project to allow foreign security forces into a narrow pocket of the devastated territory. The move is seen as a calculated diplomatic gesture with little practical effect, aimed at deflecting US pressure and fragmenting the Gaza Strip.

Months after the United Nations Security Council backed a comprehensive framework to end Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza, Israel’s security cabinet has approved a limited deployment of foreign forces under the guise of “International Stabilization Force” (ISF). The ISF will include 200 members from countries such as Morocco and Uganda deploying to a designated “test” zone in the southern city of Rafah.

While international officials have welcomed this move, analysts describe it as a calculated diplomatic gesture with little practical effect. Instead of a genuine transition towards peace, experts argue that the limited deployment is a political manoeuvre designed to deflect US pressure ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington this week.

The Israeli government maintains that the ISF will operate in full coordination with the Israeli military and retain control over the “Yellow Line” – a unilaterally imposed boundary that effectively places up to 70 percent of the Gaza Strip under tight Israeli control. The original framework endorsed by UNSC Resolution 2803 called for the deployment of an international force alongside a transitional Palestinian administration.

However, analysts say this move is a premeditated attempt to strip Hamas and other Palestinian groups of their authority and reduce them to subcontractors managing municipal decay in a devastated environment under strict military occupation. The NCAG itself has rejected this Israeli paradigm, declaring it would only assume responsibility for Gaza after UNSC approval of the force’s deployment and a full Israeli military withdrawal.

Experts warn that transforming a small pocket of Rafah into an “experimental bubble” subverts the idea of Gaza as a single, contiguous territorial entity. This raises significant diplomatic risks for participating nations, who are urged to reject this altered formula and insist on a comprehensive withdrawal from the occupied territory.

The US-backed peace process has largely stalled, with Israel’s deadly attacks continuing unabated. The Israeli government’s decision is seen as a desperate attempt to deflect pressure ahead of Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, where he will be meeting with Trump administration officials.

In conclusion, Israel’s approval of limited Gaza force is a calculated manoeuvre that aims to defuse US pressure and fragment the Gaza Strip. While it may provide some short-term benefits for Israeli security interests, experts warn that this move has significant long-term consequences for the Palestinian people and the international community.
