Iran’s Defiance

A recent visit to Iran provided a glimpse into the country’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Upon arrival, a leaflet featuring the image of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the nation’s supreme leader who passed away earlier this year, set the tone for the journey. The leaflet, found in the seat pocket of every passenger on the Iran Air flight, underscored the country’s experience with foreign aggression. As visitors entered the airport, they were met with portraits of Ayatollah Khamenei and banners emphasizing perseverance. Posters and flags called for retribution, conveying a clear message from the nation’s leaders about the country’s suffering and survival. This trip marked the first time New York Times journalists were allowed to enter the country since the conflict began in late February. The visit coincided with a period of significant unrest, following anti-government protests that started in late December and resulted in the loss of thousands of lives. As part of the visit, the team was permitted to cover the funeral ceremonies of Ayatollah Khamenei, accompanied by a government-appointed translator and guide. Source: New York Times – World
