Saudi Arabia defends against drone strikes from ‘Iran-backed’ groups

Saudi Arabia has defended itself against drone strikes from groups linked to Iran, which have targeted oil facilities and infrastructure across the Middle East. The attacks are believed to be part of a broader effort by Tehran to test Washington’s new strategy towards its rival.

The first incident occurred on Monday when Saudi officials reported intercepting drones that had been fired at their eastern province and Riyadh. The drone strikes were attributed to Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq, which have long been involved in the country’s complex sectarian conflict.

Saudi Arabia has taken swift action to respond to the attack, with its Foreign Ministry stating that it “reserves the right to respond” to the threat. This move is seen as a clear indication of Saudi Arabia’s determination to protect itself and its interests from what it perceives as Iranian aggression.

The incident comes amid a lull in hostilities between the United States and Iran, which has led some analysts to speculate that Washington may be reevaluating its stance towards Tehran. However, this is not necessarily an endorsement of the new strategy, but rather a recognition that the situation on the ground remains fluid and unpredictable.

In response to the drone attacks, Jordan and Iraq have also reported strikes against their territory. Amman shot down two drones in Jordan, while Iraqi security sources said they had been targeted by Iranian-Kurdish opposition fighters in northern Iraq. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions between these countries and Iran-aligned groups.

The drone attacks are a significant escalation of the conflict, which has already claimed the lives of four US service members over the past fortnight. This is the second such episode to confront Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s government this year, following in May when Saudi Arabia and the UAE both reported intercepting drones launched from Iraq.

The Houthis have also announced that nine of their fighters were killed amid escalating military confrontations with Yemeni government forces backed by the Saudi-led coalition. This latest development underscores the ongoing instability in the region and the need for continued diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.

In a statement, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said: “Iraq will not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks against neighboring countries.” He also emphasized that Iraq is investigating the Saudi claim that the drones had been fired from its territory. The incident highlights the need for continued cooperation and dialogue between regional powers to address the underlying causes of the conflict.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides continuing to exchange statements and accusations. However, it appears that Saudi Arabia has taken a firm stance against Iranian-backed groups in response to the drone attacks, which suggests that Tehran may be testing Washington’s new strategy towards its rival.
