Has Burnham kept his promise to do better on Israel’s war on Gaza?

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains a contentious issue, with the ongoing war on Gaza sparking concerns about human rights abuses and international condemnation.

In response to growing tensions, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced his cabinet appointments. The new lineup includes several key positions in defense and foreign policy. However, it is unclear whether these changes will address long-standing criticisms of Britain’s role in the conflict.

One major concern is that the appointment of Jeremy Hunt as Defense Secretary may exacerbate tensions with Israel. As a former Foreign Secretary under David Cameron, Hunt has been vocal about his opposition to Israeli settlements and human rights abuses in Gaza. His appointment could be seen as a step backward for British policy on the issue.

In contrast, the appointment of James Brocklebank as Foreign Secretary is more neutral. However, some critics argue that this move may not go far enough in addressing concerns about Britain’s involvement in the conflict.

The Israeli government has welcomed Sunak’s cabinet appointments, with Prime Minister Yair Lapid stating that they will “work together” to address the challenges facing Israel and Gaza. The Palestinian Authority has also expressed optimism about the new lineup, citing improved relations between Hamas and Fatah.

However, many observers are skeptical of these developments. Human rights groups have long criticized Britain’s role in the conflict, with some arguing that it is time for a more significant shift in policy. Others point to Sunak’s own past statements on the issue, which suggest he may not be willing to take decisive action against Israel.

The appointment of Jeremy Hunt as Defense Secretary has sparked particular concern among human rights groups. As Foreign Secretary, Brocklebank will have greater influence over British policy on the conflict. However, it remains unclear whether this move will lead to meaningful change or simply a rehashing of existing policies.

As tensions continue to escalate in Gaza, it is essential that Britain takes a more decisive stance on its role in the conflict. The appointment of new cabinet members may be seen as an opportunity for Sunak to demonstrate his commitment to addressing these concerns. However, it remains to be seen whether this will translate into tangible action.
