India’s Muslim Minority University Under Threat as Government Plans Demolition
The proposed demolition of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh state, has sparked widespread protests among the university’s 40,000 students, alumni, and residents. The government claims that two buildings constructed on illegal land were built without proper approvals.
Founded by prominent Muslim politician Azam Khan in 2003, the university was established three years later to provide education for minority communities. Khan had been a vocal critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since its inception and played a key role in establishing the Samajwadi Party, which has gained significant support among India’s Muslim population.
The government alleges that 38 out of 40 buildings constructed at Jauhar University were built without proper approvals. However, Vice Chancellor Zaheeruddin claims that only two structures met the required criteria and that the university is seeking a verdict to quash the demolition order outright.
Students and alumni have been holding an indefinite sit-in outside the main gate since July 15, demanding the withdrawal of the demolition order. The protests are not limited to students; nearly half of the university’s female population has also joined in, citing concerns over their safety and education opportunities.
The government has responded by issuing a stay on its order, but it is unclear whether this will halt the demolition process or if alternative measures will be taken.
“We don’t want to go anywhere else. We chose this institution for a reason,” said Iqra Tayyab, a law graduate from Jauhar University who graduated in 2019. “If we have to leave, it’s not just because of our faith but also due to the lack of opportunities here.”
The protests are part of a broader movement demanding education reforms and greater access to education for minority communities.
“We’re not just fighting against this university; we’re fighting for the future of all Muslims in India,” said Usama Tayyab, who graduated from Jauhar University. “If this is what happens to our beloved institution, then it’s a betrayal.”
The government has also been criticized by rights groups and opposition parties for its handling of the situation.
“This is not just about demolishing an old university; it’s about targeting minority institutions that have played a crucial role in promoting education and social justice,” said Apoorvanand, a teacher at the University of Delhi. “It’s a clear example of the BJP’s vendetta politics.”
The protests are ongoing, with students and alumni continuing to hold sit-ins outside the main gate. The government has promised to address their concerns through alternative measures.
In the meantime, the university is facing significant financial losses due to the planned demolition. According to reports, the RDA (Rampur Development Authority) claims that only two buildings were built on illegal land and that the other 38 structures meet the required criteria for approval.
However, Vice Chancellor Zaheeruddin has dismissed this claim, stating that the institution was granted permission by different government bodies before construction began. He also claimed that the RDA’s jurisdiction is limited to specific areas in Rampur and that the university cannot be held responsible for the alleged violations.
The fate of Jauhar University remains uncertain as protests continue outside its main gate. The government has promised to address their concerns through alternative measures, but it remains unclear what will happen next.
