US and Saudi Arabia strike ‘Iran-aligned’ groups in Iraq

**US and Saudi Arabia Target ‘Iran-Aligned’ Groups in Iraq Amid Drone Attacks**

A joint operation by the US and Saudi Arabian militaries has targeted groups deemed “Iran-aligned” in Iraq, following a series of drone attacks that have caused significant damage to oil facilities.

The strikes took place on July 29, 2026, after reports emerged of Iranian-backed militias launching drone attacks against US forces stationed in the region. The US military responded by conducting airstrikes against suspected Iranian-allied groups in Iraq.

According to sources close to the operation, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence stated that it acted in self-defence following a series of drone attacks on its oil facilities and personnel. However, this explanation has not been independently verified.

The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), an Iraqi Shia militia group, reported at least 20 casualties as a result of the strikes. The PMF claimed that they were defending themselves against Iranian-backed groups operating in their territory.

The US military’s involvement is part of a broader regional security effort aimed at countering Iran’s influence and promoting stability in Iraq. The operation has been widely condemned by international observers, who have expressed concerns over the potential escalation of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Background:

The situation in Iraq has long been marked by sectarian divisions and power struggles between different groups vying for control. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of Iranian-backed militias operating in the country, including those linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) group.

In June 2026, a US drone strike killed top ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, further escalating tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The incident has led to increased military cooperation between the two countries, with Saudi Arabia providing significant financial support for Iraqi forces in their fight against ISIS.

The joint operation by the US and Saudi Arabian militaries is seen as a key step towards addressing these concerns and promoting regional stability. However, the exact nature of the “Iran-aligned” groups targeted remains unclear, and further information may be required to fully understand the scope of the conflict.
