American, Asian confederations blindsided by FIFA’s World Cup plan

The International Confederation of Football Associations (FIFA) has unveiled a plan to create a $20 billion commercial subsidiary for its World Cup events. The move has sparked widespread criticism from regional confederations, who say they were blindsided by the proposal.

CONCACAF, which represents North America and Central America, expressed deep concern over the lack of due process in FIFA’s decision-making process. “We are deeply concerned by the lack of due process,” said CONCACAF in a statement. “We share the disappointment of many within our region and the game that this level of detail has been designed and shared publicly before any discussion with relevant governance bodies and stakeholders has taken place.”

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also criticized FIFA’s proposal, saying it was blindsided by the plan to bring private investors into the game. “Such initiatives should be founded upon the principles of good governance, transparency and meaningful consultation,” said AFC in a statement.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged that the organization had not consulted with all member associations before making its decision. “Given its direction – specifically, as I understand, bringing investment funds into a commercial entity alongside FIFA – it obviously raises many questions,” he said on French Inter radio station.

The backlash has also extended to individual country ruling bodies, including France and England’s Football Association (FA). The FA expressed concern over the lack of process and governance in getting to this point. “When the proposal is shared in the full and transparent way now promised by FIFA, we will make our views clear,” said the FA.

The European Union Sport Commissioner Glenn Micallef has also weighed in on the matter, expressing concerns about the potential for conflicts of interest between FIFA’s regulatory powers and private investors. He noted that when investments depend on decisions made by FIFA, it raises profound questions about governance, independence, and conflicts of interest.

As a result of this backlash, UEFA is planning to hold an emergency meeting with its 55 member associations to discuss FIFA’s proposal. The meeting will be virtual and aim to work out a plan of action for European football’s governing body.

The controversy surrounding the World Cup has sparked concerns about the future of football in general. While some countries have expressed enthusiasm for increased investment, others are expressing reservations over the potential risks and consequences.

As one AFC official noted, “Football is not just a game; it’s a global industry that requires careful consideration and governance to ensure its long-term sustainability.”

The international community will be closely watching FIFA’s decision-making process as they navigate this complex issue.
