A US Man Convicted of Providing Material Support to Hezbollah for Terrorist Offenses

In a significant development in the ongoing case against Hadi Matar, a 28-year-old man from New York has been convicted of providing material support to the Lebanese armed faction Hezbollah. The conviction follows months of testimony and evidence presented by prosecutors, who argued that Matar was motivated by a fatwa issued by Iran’s religious leader in 1989 for Sir Salman Rushdie’s death.

Matar, who is already serving a 25-year sentence for attempting to kill Rushdie in 2025, was convicted on Wednesday in the New York federal court of engaging in an act of transnational terrorism and providing material support to Hezbollah. The jury found that Matar had plotted the attack for two years, despite being aware of his own vulnerability due to a previous attempt at killing Rushdie.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence including videos made by Matar showing himself preparing for the attack, as well as testimony from Sir Salman Rushdie about being stabbed 15 times. The author described the attack and credited a firefighter with saving his life by providing medical care.

Assistant US Attorney Timothy Lynch argued that Matar’s motivation was rooted in a desire to enforce a fatwa issued by Iran’s religious leader for Rushdie’s death, while defense attorneys questioned whether Matar should have expected a backlash to his controversial 1988 novel The Satanic Verses. “I don’t believe the book is on trial,” Rushdie responded.

The conviction marks another significant development in the case against Hezbollah and its supporters. Prosecutors argue that providing material support to a terrorist organization constitutes an act of terrorism, which can carry severe penalties under US law.

Matar’s defense attorneys have raised questions about the fairness of the trial, citing concerns over witness credibility and potential bias. However, prosecutors maintained that Matar’s actions were motivated by a desire to harm Rushdie and that he had failed to demonstrate remorse for his crimes.

The conviction is seen as a significant step forward in holding individuals accountable for their actions, particularly those who seek to harm others through violent means. As the trial continues, it remains to be seen how this case will unfold and what implications it may have for international relations between the US and Lebanon.
