‘Pakistan’s population can reach 400 million by 2040’
Pakistan’s Population Projections: A Call to Action for Responsible Family Planning
As the world grapples with the challenges of population growth, Pakistan is facing a critical juncture. According to Minister of State for Health Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath, the country’s population could reach 400 million by 2040, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures in maternal and child healthcare and family planning.
Dr Bharath emphasized that public awareness and individual responsibility are essential components of addressing Pakistan’s rapid population growth. He underscored the importance of providing adequate nutrition, quality education, timely immunization, access to healthcare, and proper upbringing before planning families. A healthy and prosperous society can only be built when every child enjoys their fundamental rights.
The Minister also highlighted the limited use of modern contraceptive methods in Pakistan compared to other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkey. This low adoption rate contributes significantly to unintended pregnancies, which increase the incidence of unsafe abortions, posing serious risks to women’s health and placing additional pressure on the country’s healthcare system.
Dr Bharath stressed that a healthy mother is the foundation of a healthy family and a strong nation. Poor maternal health adversely affects children’s growth, education, development, and overall well-being of families. He emphasized that safeguarding maternal health is equally essential for family welfare and national progress.
In light of these challenges, Dr Bharth urged all Pakistanis to adopt family planning responsibly and with greater awareness. This includes carefully considering the resources needed to provide adequate care for children before deciding on a family size. By adopting responsible family planning practices, individuals can contribute to reducing population growth rates while also ensuring that every child receives the necessary support.
Furthermore, Dr Bharth highlighted the significant role of public-private partnerships in addressing Pakistan’s reproductive health and family planning needs. The government of China, through collaboration with the UN Population Fund, has provided essential medicines, medical supplies, and equipment worth $2 million to support Pakistan’s efforts.
As Pakistan embarks on this critical journey towards population stabilization, it is imperative that all stakeholders work together to ensure a healthy and prosperous future for its citizens. By prioritizing family planning responsibly and promoting public awareness, the country can make significant strides in addressing one of the world’s most pressing challenges.
