Lahore’s Harbanspura Building Collapse: Rescue Efforts Underway After Multiple Fatalities Reported
A devastating three-story building collapse in Lahore’s Harbanspura neighborhood has claimed at least 11 lives and injured six others, according to authorities. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the structure suddenly collapsed from top to bottom.
The building, which was home to a family of four – including an elderly woman who tragically lost her life – was being occupied by three brothers and their families for a birthday celebration earlier that day. Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise before the collapse, but no one was injured in the initial incident.
Rescue workers were quickly deployed at the scene to begin the rescue operation. The Lahore Deputy Commissioner’s office confirmed that the death toll had risen to 11 after an elderly woman’s body was pulled out from under the rubble on Thursday afternoon.
The cause of the collapse is still unknown, but a preliminary investigation has been launched by Lahore DC retired Capt Muhammad Ali Ijaz. He stated that he was supervising the rescue operation at the site and ordered officials to ensure the safe recovery of all those trapped under debris.
Heavy machinery has been deployed to speed up the operation, with Rescue 1122 teams assisted by district administration officials clearing the rubble. The Lahore DC also directed relevant officials to prioritize the safe evacuation of any remaining individuals from the scene.
The incident is not an isolated one, as it comes a month after another roof collapse at a tuition center in Lahore’s Kahna area claimed the lives of 14 children and injured several others. Police have registered a case against the owners and contractor involved in both incidents.
Construction on the building was under way when the roof collapsed, with sand and bricks being placed on top to support it. The incident has raised concerns about safety standards in construction projects, particularly those involving heavy loads or unstable structures.
The rescue efforts are ongoing, but officials have warned that there may still be trapped individuals at the scene. As of now, multiple families remain displaced by the collapse, with many more affected by the incident.
