The Proposal for a New Era: FIFA’s Plan to Sell Stakes in the World Cup

As the world of international soccer continues to evolve, one proposal has sparked intense debate among football authorities. The plan by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to create a $20 billion subsidiary to run the World Cup and its other events has been met with skepticism from regional confederations.

The idea was first announced this week, with FIFA stating that it will offer stakes of up to 20% in the new entity to external investors. The proposed stake sale is seen as part of a broader effort by FIFA to strengthen its commercial side and increase revenue streams beyond broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals.

However, not all stakeholders are convinced that this proposal is an obligation rather than a voluntary initiative. Regional confederations have expressed their disappointment at the sudden move, citing concerns about the potential impact on the sport’s core values and fan engagement.

“We were blindsided by FIFA’s decision to bring private investors into our organization,” said Carlos Tatjana Trossier, President of CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation). “It seems like a step backward for us, as we are already working hard to ensure that the World Cup remains a platform for fans and players alike.”

Infantino’s comments have been met with skepticism by some quarters. In an interview provided by FIFA on Wednesday, he stated that strengthening the commercial side of football is part of a democratic process – a consultation process.

“It’s not an obligation,” Infantino said. “It’s an opportunity to engage in a discussion and explore new ways to grow our business. And as I’ve always said, it kicks off the consultation process.”

While FIFA has maintained that fans will remain at the heart of football, some have questioned whether this proposal truly reflects their values.

“The World Cup is not just about the game itself, but also about the people who make it happen,” said Sepp Blatter, former FIFA President and current UEFA Executive Director. “We need to ensure that any changes made to our organization are in line with these values.”

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: this proposal has sparked a heated reaction from football authorities around the world.

The future of the World Cup remains uncertain as stakeholders continue to weigh their options. One thing is certain, however – FIFA’s plan to sell stakes in the tournament will be closely watched by fans and critics alike.
