Israeli strikes in Gaza Strip kill at least four, including children, amid ongoing ceasefire talks
The latest wave of violence in the Gaza Strip has resulted in the deaths of at least four people, including two children, as Israeli forces continued to target civilians despite an ongoing “ceasefire” agreement with Hamas.
According to reports from Gaza’s Ministry of Health, hospitals across the territory have received six bodies and 34 injured individuals over the past 24 hours. The victims include four new deaths, one who died from previous injuries, and one body that was recovered.
The attacks on Thursday targeted a tent encampment for people displaced by Israel’s siege in Khan Younis, which has destroyed homes for more than 1.2 million Palestinians, equivalent to almost 60 percent of the population. The attack resulted in the deaths of an eight-year-old child and injured several others.
In another incident, an air strike on Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza killed a one-month-old baby and left nine others wounded. This latest attack is part of a pattern of violence that has continued despite efforts to establish a ceasefire.
The Israeli military’s actions have been widely condemned by human rights groups, including Amnesty International, which has warned that the situation in Gaza remains “extremely dire” due to Israel’s failure to honour its obligations under the October 2025 ceasefire agreement.
Hamas officials held talks with mediators from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey on implementing the second phase of the ceasefire, but progress was slow. The group wants certain aspects of the deal to be amended to protect the rights of government employees in accordance with Palestinian law, as well as for its weapons to be managed by a Palestinian body rather than handed over to Israel.
The talks have stalled due to disagreements between Hamas and Israel on key issues, including Israel’s failure to withdraw from Gaza and cease its attacks. The situation remains volatile, with reports of ongoing violence and restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the territory.
Despite these challenges, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reported that a Hamas official said the group would deliver a “positive and good” response but provided no further details. This latest development has raised concerns about the potential for progress in implementing the ceasefire agreement.
The Israeli military’s actions have resulted in significant human suffering, with over 1,000 Palestinians killed and over 3,000 injured since October 7, 2023. The situation remains dire, and it is essential that all parties continue to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
