Pakistan Coal Mine Explosion Kills at Least 11 Miners, Dozens Still Missing

A devastating explosion has occurred at a coal mine in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 miners. The incident is believed to have been triggered by a buildup of methane gas, which was likely exacerbated by inadequate ventilation and safety measures.

The bodies of the miners were recovered hours after the blast on Thursday, with rescue efforts continuing until late Thursday night. A total of 36 people were in the collapsed part of the complex at the time of the explosion, leaving 28 still missing.

According to government mine inspector Ghani Baloch, the incident is a tragic reminder of the risks faced by miners in Pakistan’s coal mining industry. “We are hopeful to find some miners alive, but chances are low,” he said.

The explosion occurred in Sorange, a remote area near Quetta, which is the provincial capital of Balochistan. Accidents are common in the region due to inadequate ventilation and gas monitoring systems, as well as lack of basic safety measures.

Mineworkers and labour groups have long accused mine owners of failing to enforce safety regulations or provide adequate protective equipment. Despite these concerns, thousands of miners continue to depend on the coal industry for their livelihoods in Balochistan, which is Pakistan’s largest but least developed province.

The incident has raised questions about the government’s response to the crisis and its commitment to ensuring the safety of workers. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority and other emergency responders are assisting with the search efforts until all trapped miners are accounted for.

As the investigation into the cause of the explosion continues, it is clear that further action is needed to address the systemic issues plaguing Pakistan’s coal mining industry. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing worker safety and well-being in the face of economic pressures.
