Islamic State-Khorasan Claims Killing of Taliban Official in Afghanistan

A regional branch of the militant Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a high-ranking official from the Taliban militia in northeastern Afghanistan. The incident occurred when Zabihullah Amiri, head of the information and culture department in Badakhshan province, was shot dead while en route to Faizabad provincial capital.

According to sources close to the investigation, Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) carried out the attack using machine guns against Amiri’s convoy. The group claimed responsibility for the incident on Wednesday through a statement quoted by monitoring organization SITE Intelligence Group. In the statement, IS-K attributed the killing of Amiri and one of his guards to “the soldiers of the Caliphate,” indicating that they were targeting him.

The attack is believed to be part of a broader campaign by Islamic State-Khorasan against Afghan government officials who are seen as loyal to the Taliban. The group has been responsible for numerous attacks in Afghanistan since its rise to prominence, including a recent suicide bombing in Kabul that killed Taliban minister Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani.

The attack on Amiri comes at a time when security remains fragile in Afghanistan despite efforts by the government and international forces to restore order. Taliban officials have vowed to restore security to their country, but sporadic attacks continue to plague the nation since they returned to power in 2021.

IS-K’s claim of responsibility for the attack is likely intended to send a message to Afghan government officials who are perceived as opposing the group’s ideology. The incident has also raised concerns about the growing threat posed by Islamic State-Khorasan, which has been linked to several high-profile attacks around the world.

The investigation into the attack is ongoing, and it remains to be seen how IS-K plans to respond to this latest development in their campaign against Afghan government officials. As tensions escalate between the group and the Taliban, one thing is clear: the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, with no end in sight for the violence and instability that has plagued the country since 2021.
