Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senior International Editor Sherry Rehman expressed her party’s opposition to any further discussion on the proposed administrative units, citing concerns over potential implications for national unity and stability.

The proposal, floated by Senator Farooq Naqvi of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), suggests the formation of separate administrative units within the country. This idea has been met with skepticism from various stakeholders, including the PPP.

According to sources close to the party, Rehman stated that “the PPP will not be swayed by any proposal that threatens our national unity and stability.” She emphasized that the party’s primary focus is on addressing Pakistan’s pressing issues, such as poverty, education, and healthcare.

Rehman also expressed her concerns over the potential consequences of creating separate administrative units. “We have seen in other countries how these units can lead to fragmentation and undermine the overall functioning of the state,” she warned.

The PPP has long been critical of the idea of administrative units, which they argue would create artificial divisions within a country. In 2018, Rehman had spoken out against the proposed creation of separate administrative units in Punjab province, citing concerns over potential social unrest and economic disruption.

Senator Farooq Naqvi’s proposal is part of a broader discussion on regional governance in Pakistan. The idea has been floated by various parties, including the PML-N, which has long advocated for greater autonomy for provinces.

However, not all stakeholders are supportive of the concept. The PPP has expressed concerns over potential implications for national unity and stability, as well as fears that it could lead to fragmentation and undermine the overall functioning of the state.

The debate on administrative units is ongoing, with various parties vying for support. While some have expressed enthusiasm for the idea, others remain skeptical. As Rehman emphasized, “the PPP will not be swayed by any proposal that threatens our national unity and stability.”
