A senior PML-N leader from Punjab emphasized that most legislators want respect but feel they are being given preference by the bureaucracy.
Elected representatives face considerable pressure from constituents, particularly in rural areas, who approach them on a range of issues including policing and land disputes, municipal services, development schemes, and other matters involving government departments. When an MP takes a complaint to a district officer or police official without receiving due importance, they can expect anger from their voters.
The Chief Minister’s decision to meet lawmakers more frequently may help address the sense of alienation among some party legislators without compromising her policy on merit-based appointments. Given the current political environment, it is expected that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz will continue meeting PML-N MPAs and listening to their grievances.
While Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bokhari has stated that all appointments are now made strictly on merit, this does not necessarily mean that there is no room for influence by ruling-party lawmakers or other individuals. The policy change aimed at promoting professionalism in the provincial administration may have unintended consequences if it leads to favoritism.
