India’s Modi says he forgives students who abused him in Cockroach protests

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed forgiveness towards students who hurled expletives at him during protests last month over the voiding of crucial exam questions. The protests, which emerged in May after a leaked question paper sparked widespread discontent among students and youth leaders, were initially driven by social media campaigns calling for educational reform.

The Cockroach Janta Party, as protesters called themselves, was an online movement that morphed into a mass protest mobilizing tens of thousands of supporters across India. The protests eventually subsided after the Modi government agreed to all demands, including the resignation of education minister Ramesh Verma and pledged not to pursue criminal cases against demonstrators.

However, despite these concessions, authorities in states ruled by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party filed hundreds of cases against protesters, sparking concerns over human rights abuses. The protests also highlighted issues related to social media regulation, with the government introducing a bill requiring platforms to remove unlawful content within three hours.

The Cockroach Janta Party has accused supporters of Modi’s far-right Hindu nationalist politics of doxing female protesters on social media and hurling rape and death threats at them. These allegations have sparked outrage among human rights groups, who argue that such behavior is unacceptable in a democratic society.

Modi himself described the protests as “misled children” who must be shown the right path rather than being prosecuted and punished. He claimed that his expletives were targeted at him and his late mother during the protest, stating: “I want to forgive them.” However, critics argue that this statement is hypocritical given Modi’s history of using social media to attack opponents.

The protests also highlighted tensions between protesters and government forces in several parts of the country. In New Delhi, people attempting to march on parliament were met with tear gas, pellet shotguns, and baton charges. The movement said that hundreds of students had been arrested in various states, violating the government’s commitment to dropping police cases filed against protesters.

The opposition has pressed for Modi’s Home Minister Amit Shah to be sacked over the crackdown on students. The protests also prompted the Modi government to introduce a bill in parliament to amend legislation governing public examinations, proposing longer prison terms and higher fines for those involved in exam paper leaks.

In response to criticism of his handling of the situation, Modi has faced backlash from social media users who have accused him of moral policing protesters. However, he remains committed to forgiving students who hurled expletives at him during protests, stating: “These are misled children. Showing them the right path is our duty.”
