The Five Dramatic Days That Shook Infantino and World Football

Gianni Infantino has faced significant backlash for his proposed private-investment plan to FIFA, which aimed to increase revenue by $40 million through additional football development initiatives. The move sparked memories of the European Super League debacle in 2021.

In a dramatic five-day period, UEFA’s governing body made it clear that they had “lost confidence” in Infantino’s leadership and were no longer willing to support his plans. This was evident in their statement on Saturday, which stated: “The current Fifa leadership has not only lost Uefa’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family.”

Infantino’s proposal was met with fierce criticism from various stakeholders within FIFA, including former England defender Gary Neville and Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. Neville described Infantino’s plan as “pure greed,” while Al Khalifa emphasized the need for transparency in future plans.

The lack of transparency surrounding Infantino’s proposals has been a recurring theme throughout his tenure at FIFA. In 2016, he asked for trust from member associations to elect him as their president, but failed to deliver on this promise. This failure was highlighted by Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who stated that any future plans should be presented in a “timely, transparent and meaningful manner.”

Football Australia chair Anter Isaac echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of integrity, independence, good governance, transparency, meaningful consultation, due process, and adherence to established governance structures.

The European Super League all over again?

Critics argued that Infantino’s plan was an attempt to enrich himself in a closed league that would have increased commercial and broadcasting income. The principle of a domestic football pyramid should be protected, they claimed. However, this argument has been met with skepticism by many within the industry.

In contrast, Prince William expressed support for the Premier League’s opposition to Infantino’s plan, stating: “The only way forward is to preserve our national leagues and maintain the integrity of our game.”

Despite the backlash, FIFA did attempt to put its counterargument forward in early hours on Friday. However, this move was seen as a last-ditch effort by many within the organization.

As with the ESL, sentiment against Infantino’s plan has been strong, with many stakeholders expressing their opposition through various channels. The five dramatic days that have passed will likely be remembered for years to come, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and integrity in governance structures.
