FIFA President Infantino’s Position Under Fire After Failed Plan to Sell Stake in World Cup Commercial Rights

The situation surrounding Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell a stake in the World Cup’s commercial rights has sparked intense debate and criticism within European football leagues. The move, which was met with widespread opposition from regional associations, has left many questioning whether Infantino’s position as FIFA president is untenable.

According to sources close to the organization, Infantino had proposed selling a minority stake in the lucrative global broadcasting deal that secures the rights for the World Cup and other major international tournaments. The plan was seen as an attempt by Infantino to maximize profits for third parties, with some arguing it would lead to more expensive competitions being added to the already packed schedule.

However, regional confederations such as UEFA and CONCACAF have expressed their disappointment in Infantino’s leadership, citing a lack of transparency and consultation from key stakeholders. The proposals were reportedly presented without any prior discussion or input from FIFA Council members, leading many to question whether Infantino was acting alone on the matter.

The European Leagues’ chief executive, Claudius Schaefer, has stated that the proposal was unacceptable due to its focus solely on financial gains for third parties. “It’s solely about the financial advantages; everything else is completely ignored,” he said in an interview with Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung. The plan would have added more matches to the international calendar at the expense of national championships, according to Schaefer.

Schaefer also expressed his surprise that Infantino was acting alone on the matter, stating: “I was very surprised that the president was acting completely alone in this matter.” This has led many within European football leagues to question whether Infantino’s leadership is stable and effective.

The failed plan has sparked a significant backlash against Infantino, with some calling for his resignation. The situation highlights concerns about FIFA’s governance structure and the lack of transparency surrounding key decisions made by its leaders.
