Lahore Traffic Police Launch Comprehensive Verification of Commercial Vehicle Drivers
The Lahore traffic police have initiated a comprehensive verification process for commercial vehicle drivers following reports that they were involved in nearly half of the city’s total fatal road crashes. This move comes as part of an effort to address the growing trend of commercial vehicle-related accidents and prevent future fatalities.
According to official data, there are approximately 8.2 million registered vehicles in Lahore, including 348,000 commercial vehicles, representing about five percent of the city’s total fleet. Despite their relatively small share, these vehicles were involved in a staggering 48% of all fatal road crashes during the same period.
The traffic police have been informed that commercial drivers with criminal records, histories of repeated traffic crashes, or conduct posing a threat to public safety will not be granted permits or licenses to operate commercial vehicles. The Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi has emphasized the importance of ensuring that all commercial and public service vehicle drivers meet strict eligibility criteria.
The verification process involves checking the driver’s criminal background, driving history, license status, and overall suitability for operating a commercial vehicle. Drivers with any of these factors will be denied permits or licenses to operate vehicles. The traffic police have also instructed transport unions and commercial vehicle owners to ensure that no driver is employed or entrusted with a vehicle without proper verification.
The CTO has warned that accountability will extend beyond negligent drivers, as those who enable them through negligence or disregard for safety standards will face strict legal action. Vehicle owners and transport operators found operating vehicles with fake, forged, expired, suspended, or otherwise invalid driving licenses will also be held accountable under the law.
As part of this effort to prevent future fatalities, the traffic police have granted approval for strict enforcement actions against individuals found operating vehicles with fake or invalid driving licenses. This move aims to ensure that all commercial and public service vehicle drivers meet the necessary standards before being allowed to operate on the roads.
The Lahore traffic police’s decision has been welcomed by transport unions and commercial vehicle owners, who are committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all road users.
