Trump says new Iran talks set to start today after calling off massive attack

US President Donald Trump announced plans to hold off on striking Iran in an effort to pursue a potential agreement to end the six-month-long war. The talks would focus on resolving the ongoing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the country’s nuclear program.

The US president stated that negotiations with Iran would begin on Monday, covering key areas such as the Strait of Hormuz and denuclearization efforts. Trump expressed optimism about the prospects for a deal, citing previous ceasefires between the two nations.

Iran has been seeking to establish a new route through the strait, which it claims is necessary for its energy needs. The country’s oil prices have fallen significantly since Trump announced the new negotiations, with West Texas Intermediate dropping 4.7% to $80.72 per barrel on Monday.

The US and Iran have had a long-standing conflict over issues including war and diplomacy. In February 2023, the US and Israel launched surprise strikes against Iran, but months of diplomatic efforts have led to periods of relative calm.

Following a return to strikes last month, fears mounted that the fighting could escalate again. Trump threatened to hit Iran “very hard” in response, although he later pulled back from this threat on Saturday.

The new negotiations are seen as an attempt by both sides to find common ground and avoid further conflict. The talks will be held at a neutral location, with no details revealed about the venue or participants involved.

Iranian media has denied that Tehran had asked Trump not to strike, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran must “strive to compel” its enemies to remain committed to agreements signed in the past. The US president also expressed optimism about finding a deal, citing previous successes in diplomatic efforts.

The conflict between the US and Iran has resulted in significant economic losses for both nations, with oil prices falling significantly since Trump announced new negotiations. The talks are seen as an opportunity for both sides to work towards resolving their differences and avoiding further escalation.
