The Death Toll from Suicide Bombing Near Police Station in Swat Rises to 19

A devastating suicide bombing occurred near a police station in Swat on Sunday, resulting in the loss of at least 15 lives and injuring 18 others. The attack took place while a protest against lawlessness was underway at an adjoining public square.

According to eyewitnesses, the bomber detonated explosives after attempting to stop and search him at the entrance to the Kabal Police Station. The blast caused widespread destruction and left many trapped under debris.

The police spokesperson for Swat, Nasir Iqbal Karimi, reported that four more victims succumbed to their injuries during treatment on Monday, raising the death toll to 19. “Rescue teams provided first aid at the scene before shifting the injured to various hospitals for further treatment,” he stated in a statement.

The police operation was launched immediately after the attack, with over 50 Rescue 1122 personnel participating in the rescue efforts. The authorities have continued relief operations and are working tirelessly to provide assistance to those affected by the bombing.

In addition to the Swat Police Department, officials from Malakand Regional Police Office, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s office, and other government agencies have arrived in Swat to offer their support. The chief minister has also expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Pakistan, with many calling for stronger measures against terrorism. Lawyers, traders, and residents of Kabal Tehsil have observed a complete strike to condemn the bombing and demand lasting peace in Swat.

Lawyers across Swat and Upper Swat have also announced plans to hold protests on August 7 to express solidarity with the victims and urge the government to take decisive action against terrorist groups operating in the area. The KP police has been battling terrorism for over two decades, but officials say that their efforts are still not enough.

The Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) has reported an uptick in terrorist activity across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat. According to a recent assessment, the region is considered one of the most vulnerable areas due to its porous borders and lack of effective security measures.

In light of this tragic incident, the Pakistan government has promised that it will take all necessary steps to ensure the protection of KP police and citizens in their fight against terrorism. The Chief Minister’s statement emphasized the importance of unity among different groups in addressing the issue of terrorism.

The people and police of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are bearing the brunt of the federal government’s flawed policies, according to CM Sohail Afridi. He vowed that the sacrifices made by KP police and citizens would not go in vain, emphasizing the need for a decisive phase against terrorism.

CM Afridi also announced that Rs20 billion has been allocated to support KP police in their fight against terrorism. The Chief Minister stated that KP police have been combating terrorism for over 22 years and are capable of withstanding any challenge.

The people of Swat have expressed their solidarity with the victims, calling on the government to ensure lasting peace and bring those responsible to justice. A smartly turned-out police contingent presented a guard of honour to Constable Mukarram Khan and Constable Hussain Khan at Javed Iqbal Shaheed Police Lines, where two policemen were martyred in the bombing.

The funeral prayers for the martyrs have been held at Javed Iqbal Shaheed Police Lines. A large-scale rescue operation was launched immediately after the attack, with over 50 Rescue 1122 personnel participating. The authorities are continuing relief efforts and working tirelessly to provide assistance to those affected by the bombing.

In a separate statement, Swat police said that the funeral prayers of two policemen martyred in the suicide attack were held at Javed Iqbal Shaheed Police Lines on Monday. A smartly turned-out police contingent presented a guard of honour to Constable Mukarram Khan and Constable Hussain Khan, and floral wreaths were laid on their coffins.

The ceremony was attended by Malakand Regional Police Officer Syed Fida Hassan Shah, Swat District Police Officer Muhammad Umar Khan, Superintendent of Police (operations) Ghulam Sadiq Khan, Superintendent of Police (headquarters) Ataullah, and other senior police officers.
