The Indian Wrestling Federation’s Former Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Acquitted of Sexual Harassment Allegations

A New Delhi court has acquitted former head of the Indian wrestling federation, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, of charges of sexual harassment and stalking brought by several medal-winning athletes. The case had sparked widespread protests in 2023 as top wrestlers demanded Singh’s removal from his position.

The allegations against Singh centered on accusations that he groped and demanded sexual favors from women wrestlers. However, the court found inconsistencies in witness statements and contradictions on major issues, leading to its verdict.

Singh’s supporters were jubilant upon hearing the news, with many showering him with flowers and chanting slogans outside his residence. The former head of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had been accused by several women wrestlers of such behavior during a period when protests erupted in 2023 over allegations of harassment.

The court’s decision has sparked renewed calls for Singh to be held accountable for his actions, with top wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik demanding that he step down as the head of the WFI. However, their efforts have been met with resistance from Singh’s supporters, who claim that the allegations against him were fabricated.

Phogat stated in an interview that they would appeal against the judgment to a higher court, vowing to continue fighting for justice and accountability. “It took a great deal of courage for us to take to the streets and get a complaint registered against a powerful leader of the ruling party,” she said.

The acquittal marks a significant victory for Singh’s supporters, who had been demanding his removal from office since 2023. The case highlights the ongoing struggles faced by women in sports, particularly those involved in high-profile events like wrestling, where they often face harassment and abuse.

As news of the verdict spread, Delhi police charged Singh with sexual harassment and stalking in 2023 after months of mounting pressure from protesting athletes. However, the court’s decision has effectively put an end to these allegations, leaving Singh’s future in office uncertain.

The outcome of this case serves as a reminder that justice can be slow to arrive, particularly when it comes to cases involving powerful individuals like politicians and sports leaders. As one observer noted, “It took a great deal of courage for us to take to the streets and get a complaint registered against a powerful leader of the ruling party.”
