Pakistan’s Political Rollercoaster: What Really Happened to Imran Khan?

The last three days have been a rollercoaster ride in Pakistan politics. The Honourable Supreme Court gave a decision to take former Prime Minister Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital due to his health concerns. But did it really happen or not?

On August 18, a judicial bench of the Supreme Court gave a decision in favour of Imran Khan regarding his health concerns in Adiala Jail. The Honourable Court gave the government 48 hours to shift the former PM to a private hospital for medical facilities. There was a clear division within the Pakistan Muslim League (N) ruling party, with some ministers saying they would obey the court’s ruling, while some criticised it and submitted an appeal against the decision.

Later, on August 20, the government took its appeal back. But there were already rumours circulating that Imran would be taken to PIMS rather than a private hospital. Islamabad Police and other security forces secured the area and restricted even the media from entering within a radius of one kilometre of the hospital. Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf also appealed to its workers to avoid gathering around the hospital.

But how can you restrict people from seeing their beloved leader? For a glimpse after three years, it was worth it for them. The government took a decision here to take Imran Khan to PIMS Hospital, which was clearly a violation of the court’s ruling. Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed that the former PM was taken to PIMS.

This political tide ended with a quick move of the former PM from Adiala to the hospital and then back to Adiala. This was followed by a series of allegations from Imran’s sisters, Uzma Khan and Noorain Khan, and his doctor, Dr Faisal, about his health.

Uzma Khan said that her brother was receiving similar treatment to Egyptian President Morsi. She further added details about her brother’s serious medical emergency. Dr Faisal added that they waited at the private hospital, but Imran Khan never reached there.

This whole situation raised serious concerns, from the court being dishonoured to the former PM’s health issues. But the main thing is to wait for the official statement from the hospital administration or the government.
