Ex-FIFA chief Blatter blasts plan to sell stake in World Cup to investors

The Future of Football: Sepp Blatter’s Warning Against Selling Stake in World Cup

As the world prepares to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, concerns are growing about the potential sale of a significant stake in the tournament. The plan, proposed by FIFA president Sepp Blatter, would create a $20 billion subsidiary to run the event and its other competitions.

The idea has sparked intense debate among football authorities, with UEFA expressing concern that it could lead to the World Cup becoming an investment product for private equity firms seeking returns on their investments. However, not everyone is convinced of the wisdom behind this proposal.

Blatter’s comments have been met with skepticism by some quarters, who argue that selling a stake in the tournament would be a betrayal of its core values. “Football belongs to no individual and to no institution,” Blatter said in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday. “It belongs to the people.”

The idea is not new, however. In 2015, FIFA president Michel Platini proposed creating a $10 billion subsidiary to run the World Cup, but it was met with widespread criticism from football authorities.

Blatter’s warning comes as he prepares to step down as FIFA president in 2021. His successor, Gianni Infantino, has vowed to protect the interests of football fans and players at all costs.

The proposed sale would allow external investors to take a stake in FIFA, potentially leading to changes in the governance structure of the organization. However, it is unclear whether this would be beneficial for the sport as a whole or just those with financial resources.

Blatter’s comments have been met with praise from some quarters, who argue that he has always prioritized the interests of football fans over those of corporate sponsors and investors. “The FIFA World Cup is not a commercial asset that belongs to a handful of executives,” Blatter said. “It is part of the cultural heritage of world football.”

However, others have expressed concerns about the potential impact on the sport’s integrity. UEFA president Michel Platini has warned that selling a stake in the tournament could lead to a loss of control over its future.

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Sepp Blatter’s warning against selling a stake in the World Cup remains a pressing concern for football authorities around the world.
