FIFA Proposes Plan to Sell Stakes in World Cup Amid UEFA Frustration

In a move that has sparked intense debate and criticism from European football governing body UEFA, FIFA announced plans to sell stakes in the 2026 World Cup. The proposal, which was revealed on Tuesday, aims to raise up to $4.2 billion through minority investment from external parties.

The plan is part of FIFA’s broader strategy to increase funds for global participation and widen access to the sport. However, UEFA has expressed strong opposition to the idea, citing concerns that it would undermine the integrity of football and erode its governing institutions’ authority.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated in a statement that the organization values “football as the world’s most popular sport” and wants to ensure that all net benefits from the World Cup are reinvested in the game. He emphasized FIFA’s commitment to supporting sustainable, inclusive development in every corner of the world.

The proposed investor group is expected to be led by Joshua Kushner, the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. The vehicle behind the proposal will have a majority share in the new FIFA Forward Enterprise and minority stakes for external investment.

FIFA has also announced plans to hold a 48-team World Cup across North America, which is expected to be one of the biggest tournaments in history. This move aims to increase revenue through broadcasting rights, sponsorship, and other commercial deals linked to the tournament.

The proposal has sparked widespread criticism from UEFA, with many calling for FIFA to reconsider its plan. The European Football Association (UEFA) said that it takes the new proposals “extremely seriously” but expressed concerns about transparency regarding who would benefit financially from the sale of stakes in the World Cup.

In response to the backlash, FIFA President Infantino stated that football is not a product to be sold and that its sole focus should be on broadening access to the sport. He emphasized that all net benefits from the World Cup will be reinvested in football, ensuring that it continues to grow with success.

The controversy surrounding the proposal has raised questions about FIFA’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Critics argue that the organization is prioritizing financial gain over its core values of inclusivity and sustainability.

As the debate continues, UEFA remains resolute in its opposition to the plan. The European Football Association (UEFA) will continue to scrutinize FIFA’s proposals and ensure that any changes are made with full transparency and accountability.
