New Zealand FM in row with Beijing’s envoy after telling …

New Zealand’s top diplomat Winston Peters drew ire from Beijing’s envoy after making comments about a Chinese-born lawmaker during a debate on Wednesday. The lawmaker had asked whether he was vaccinated against COVID-19, prompting Peters’ response that the individual should “go back to their own country.” This statement sparked a rare intervention from China’s ambassador in New Zealand, Wang Xiaolong.

Peters fired back at Wang, saying his comments had proven his point and stating that if they offended certain individuals or groups, it was acceptable. He also emphasized the importance of free speech and rights within a democracy, suggesting that other countries limit these values with force.

The exchange has sparked criticism from New Zealand’s fractured political system, where Peters’ party is seen as kingmakers. Earlier this year, Peters’ deputy Shane Jones criticized New Zealand’s trade deal with India over concerns it would risk triggering a “butter chicken tsunami.” Last year, Peters and Jones were forced to back down after the deputy yelled at MP Francisco Hernandez during a debate.

Peters had previously made comments that sparked criticism from other lawmakers. In 2020, he told an Indian-born politician that New Zealand should “send the Mexicans home” in response to their questioning of his government’s handling of COVID-19. The incident led to Peters and Jones being forced to apologize for their remarks.

Wang Xiaolong has said that while he prefers not to intervene in domestic politics, statements made by individuals can reveal a lot about them. He added that sometimes, the words spoken say more about the person making them than anything else involved.

The exchange highlights New Zealand’s complex relationship with China and its commitment to free speech and democracy. While Peters’ comments have sparked criticism from some lawmakers, they also reflect the country’s values of tolerance and open discussion within a democratic system.
