New Zealand FM in row with Beijing’s envoy after telling …

New Zealand’s top diplomat Winston Peters drew ire from Beijing’s envoy after making comments about a Chinese-born lawmaker during a debate on Wednesday. The lawmaker, Lawrence Xu-Nan, was asked by NZ First leader Peters if he had been vaccinated against COVID-19.

In response to the question, Peters said that Xu-Nan had “come here five minutes ago” and then added: “Go back to your own country. That’s where they lie like a flatfish, but they don’t lie like that here.” He also stated that this was called a democracy unlike what one is used to.

The comments sparked a rare intervention from Chinese ambassador Wang Xiaolong, who said on X that while he preferred to stay out of domestic politics, “suffice it to say, sometimes, a statement says more about the person that makes it than anything or anybody else.”

Wang’s comments were seen as an attempt to downplay Peters’ remarks and avoid further controversy. However, Peters fired back at Wang, saying his comments had “proven my point.” He also stated that New Zealand lived in a democracy where free speech and rights were included.

Peters’ comments have been criticized by some for being racist, particularly given the lawmaker’s Chinese heritage. Earlier this year, Peters’ deputy Shane Jones made similar comments about India’s trade deal with New Zealand, calling it “a butter chicken tsunami.” The incident led to Jones backing down after a heated debate.

The situation has raised concerns in Beijing, where there are tensions between China and New Zealand over issues such as trade and security. The Chinese ambassador’s intervention suggests that the two countries may be taking steps to manage their relationship.

It is worth noting that Peters’ comments have been widely criticized by human rights groups and some politicians who argue that they perpetuate racist stereotypes. However, others see his remarks as a legitimate expression of concern about public health and safety in New Zealand.

Regardless of one’s perspective on the matter, it is clear that Peters’ comments have sparked a heated debate between China and New Zealand over issues of democracy, free speech, and human rights.
