UEFA says will boycott World Cup if FIFA pushes private investor proposal

The European Football Association (UEFA) has announced that it will boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup if its proposal to create a private investor-owned subsidiary is approved by FIFA.

According to UEFA’s statement, “No UEFA national teams will participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership.”

The proposed investment plan would allow private investors to acquire stakes in the company but maintain minority shareholder status. The governing body hopes to raise up to $4.2 billion based on a valuation of $20 billion for the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative.

However, UEFA has expressed strong opposition to the proposal, arguing that it “has no place in world football” and would undermine the interests of national associations, leagues, clubs, players, and supporters. The association’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, boycotted the World Cup final to show his unhappiness with FIFA.

The proposed investment plan has drawn criticism from several leading European federations and EU officials, who view it as another step in the commercialisation of sport. They have raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest and the loss of control over football’s future.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the initiative as a “golden opportunity to turbocharge the development of the game globally.” However, UEFA has stated that “football’s future cannot be dictated by the expectations of those whose first duty is to maximise financial return.”

The proposed investment plan has also been met with skepticism from CONCACAF and AFC officials, who have expressed concerns over potential conflicts of interest. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has called on its members to review Fifa’s controversial plan.

UEFA will not participate in any FIFA competition for so long as the proposal remains alive unless it is abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances are given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership. The association’s statement concludes with a clear message: “No one has the moral authority to sell what they merely hold in trust for the next generation.”
