UEFA says will boycott World Cup if FIFA pushes private investor proposal

The proposed private investor plan by FIFA could lead to the boycott of the 2026 FIFA World Cup if UEFA pushes forward with its proposal.

FIFA’s plans to create a commercial subsidiary, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), aim to raise up to $4.2 billion from a valuation of $20 billion through various means, including selling minority stakes in the company and increasing funding allocations for member associations. The proposed plan has drawn criticism from UEFA, who argue that it violates the principles of football’s governance structure.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin expressed his opposition to the proposal, stating that “football’s future cannot be dictated by the expectations of those whose first duty is to maximise financial return.” He also emphasized that Europe will never lend FIFA its legitimacy if such a model remains in place. The governing body has stated that it would boycott any World Cup competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless they are abandoned and binding assurances given regarding the governance structure.

The proposal has been met with skepticism from several leading European federations and EU officials, who view it as another step towards commercializing sport. They have raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest and the impact on national associations’ interests. The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have also expressed their opposition to the plan.

The proposal has been made public before FIFA’s 211 member associations were fully consulted, which has raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest. UEFA argued that “football cannot mortgage its future for financial gain” and emphasized that Europe will never lend FIFA its legitimacy if this model remains in place.

UEFA stated on Thursday that the World Cup is a “one of football’s greatest sporting legacies,” built over generations by players, national teams, and supporters across every continent. The governing body has also highlighted the importance of maintaining control over the game, saying that it will never be for sale.

The proposal remains at an impasse, with UEFA expressing its determination to oppose these plans with absolute determination. It is unclear whether FIFA’s plan will proceed as proposed or if a compromise can be reached.
