US-Iran negotiations ongoing under framework of Islamabad MoU: FO

The United States and Iran have resumed their stalled nuclear deal negotiations in a bid to revive the stalled agreement, according to Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi. The talks are taking place within the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was signed on July 20, 2023.

As part of the ongoing discussions, both sides have agreed to resume technical-level negotiations in an effort to reach a mutually acceptable agreement. This move comes after several weeks of intense diplomatic efforts, with the US and Iran engaging in extensive talks via video conferencing.

The Islamabad MoU is seen as a crucial step towards reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal. The agreement was signed by 55 countries, including the United States, Iran, and other major world powers, to limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

The talks have been ongoing since July 15, with both sides exchanging proposals and counter-proposals on key issues such as Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities. The US has expressed concerns about Iran’s continued uranium enrichment activities, which it believes pose a significant threat to regional security.

Iran, however, has maintained that its nuclear program is peaceful and that the country will not be deterred from pursuing its scientific research and development goals. The Iranian government has also emphasized its commitment to upholding the JCPOA agreement and ensuring compliance with international norms.

The resumption of technical-level talks marks a significant shift in the negotiations, as both sides have agreed to engage in more detailed discussions on sensitive issues such as uranium enrichment and missile technology transfers. This approach is seen as a crucial step towards reaching a mutually acceptable agreement that addresses the concerns of all parties involved.

As the US-Iran negotiations continue, the international community remains vigilant about the potential implications for regional security. The Gulf region has been particularly affected by tensions between Iran and its neighbors, with several countries in the area expressing concern over increased Iranian military activity.

The ongoing talks have also raised questions about the future of the JCPOA agreement, which is set to expire on January 3, 2027. If a new deal is not reached within this timeframe, it could lead to further escalation and potentially catastrophic consequences for regional stability.

In conclusion, the US-Iran negotiations under the Islamabad MoU are an important step towards reviving the JCPOA agreement and addressing the concerns of all parties involved. However, the road ahead will be fraught with challenges, and any breakthroughs must be carefully managed by both sides to ensure a successful outcome.
