Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has approved Commander National Strategic Command General Syed Aamer Raza to receive the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) award for his outstanding contributions to national security. The decision was made after a thorough review process, following the government’s efforts to strengthen its higher military command structure.
The President’s Secretariat announced on social media that the president has approved conferring the prestigious honor on Gen Raza, who is currently serving as Commander National Strategic Command. This marks another significant milestone in Pakistan’s strategic development, as the country continues to work towards integrating its various armed forces under a single operational headquarters.
Gen Aamer Raza has previously been awarded the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-i-Basalat (Star of Valour), two of Pakistan’s highest military honors. His appointment as Commander National Strategic Command is part of a broader effort to modernize and strengthen Pakistan’s defense architecture, following the 27th Constitutional Amendment enacted in November last year.
The amendment fundamentally altered Pakistan’s higher defence architecture by abolishing the office of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and creating the new position of Chief of Defence Forces. Field Marshal Asim Munir became the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces after the constitutional changes, marking a significant shift towards greater autonomy for the military.
Under the amended Army Act, Gen Raza is appointed by the Prime Minister on the recommendation of the Chief of Defence Forces from among serving army generals and serves a three-year term. The Commander National Strategic Command plays a crucial role in overseeing the operational integration of Pakistan’s strategic forces, bringing together the Army, Navy, and Air Force under a single command structure.
Before his elevation to the position of Commander National Strategic Command, Gen Raza had been serving as Chief of General Staff, where he oversaw organizational changes necessitated by the 27th Amendment and the restructuring that followed last year’s conflict with India. He has also held various senior positions, including Director General Weapons and Equipment and Chief of Staff at II Corps.
Gen Aamer Raza is a highly respected military leader who has commanded an armoured regiment, an armoured brigade, an infantry brigade in South Waziristan, an infantry division, and Lahore’s IV Corps. He also headed Heavy Industries Taxila before his appointment to the new position.
The President’s approval of Gen Raza for the Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military) award marks another significant step towards strengthening Pakistan’s defense capabilities.
