Avalanche Strikes Nepal-Nepal Border Expedition on Broad Peak
A severe avalanche has struck an expedition led by renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Dai, also known as Nirmal Purja, on the Pakistan side of Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountain range. The incident occurred late last week, and despite efforts to reach the stranded climbers, their fate remains unknown.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), which represents Nepal’s mountaineering community, has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the situation. The club reported that the team was led by Purja, who is known for his numerous climbing records, including breaking multiple eight-thousanders in six months and six days between April and October 2019.
The ACP stated that the expedition comprises ten climbers from Nepal, with five members hailing from Pakistan, one each from Oman, China, and the United States. The team’s nationality was not disclosed due to security concerns. “Every possible effort is being made to ensure that helicopter support and all available rescue resources are mobilized at the earliest opportunity,” said an ACP spokesperson.
The incident occurred on Broad Peak, which stands as the 12th-highest mountain in the world. Climbers typically begin their ascent from the base camp of the mountain, but the avalanche swept through the area, trapping several members of the expedition.
Purja’s reputation for exceptional climbing skills is well-documented, having climbed all 14 eight-thousanders (peaks above 8,000 meters) in six months and six days between April and October 2019. In 2021, he completed the first winter ascent of K2 as part of a team consisting of nine other Nepalese climbers.
The ACP has assured that all necessary measures are being taken to locate and rescue the stranded climbers. However, given the remote location and harsh weather conditions in the Karakoram range, it is uncertain when or if they will be found alive.
As news of the incident spreads, concerns have been raised about the risks faced by mountaineers attempting expeditions on high-altitude mountains like Broad Peak. The ACP has emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of climbers in these regions.
The fate of Nirmal Purja’s expedition remains a mystery at this time, but efforts are being made to locate them as soon as possible.
