Famed mountaineer Nirmal Purja, 43, among 10 climbers killed after avalanche in Pakistan
Famous mountaineer Nirmal Purja, a highly decorated climber from Nepal, lost his life on Saturday when an avalanche struck him while attempting to climb Broad Peak, one of the world’s 12th-tallest mountains in Pakistan.
Purja, who was leading a group of climbers up Broad Peak, fell during the descent and was buried under snow. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm local time on Thursday, when an avalanche swept through the area.
Elite Exped, the company involved in the expedition, confirmed that Purja had been killed along with seven other climbers from Pakistan, Nepal, and China. A rescue team led by Pakistani Sherpa Kami Rita was dispatched to the scene immediately after the incident, but due to weather conditions, they were forced to temporarily halt their operation.
The search for the remaining bodies resumed on Saturday, with rescuers working tirelessly in the remote and difficult terrain of Broad Peak. The recovery efforts are ongoing, with three bodies already recovered by a Pakistani rescue team.
