Famous mountaineer Nirmal Purja, a highly decorated climber from Nepal, lost his life on Saturday when an avalanche struck him while attempting to climb Broad Peak, one of the world’s 12th-tallest mountains in Pakistan.

Purja, who was leading a group of climbers up Broad Peak, fell during the descent and was buried under snow. The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm local time on Thursday, when an avalanche swept through the area.

Elite Exped, the company involved in the expedition, confirmed that Purja had been killed along with seven other climbers from Pakistan, Nepal, and China. A rescue team led by Pakistani Sherpa Kami Rita was dispatched to the scene immediately after the incident, but due to weather conditions, they were forced to temporarily halt their operation.

The search for the remaining bodies resumed on Saturday, with rescuers working tirelessly in the remote and difficult terrain of Broad Peak. The recovery efforts are ongoing, with three bodies already recovered by a Pakistani rescue team.

Nirmal Purja’s death is a significant loss not only to the mountaineering community but also to the international community at large. He was known for his incredible climbing achievements, including summiting all 14 highest mountains in seven months without supplemental oxygen.

Purja had been leading the group up Broad Peak since Tuesday evening and was part of an elite team that included American Sarah Mallory Geis, who died alongside him. The incident has left many in the mountaineering community mourning the loss of a true pioneer and adventurer.

The search for the remaining bodies continues, with rescue teams working to locate all those trapped under the snow. The Pakistani government has declared a state of emergency in the area due to the severity of the situation.

As news of Purja’s death spreads, tributes are pouring in from around the world. British Defense Minister Wes Streeting described Purja as an “inspirational man who served in our Armed Forces for many years — and whose incredible mountaineering adventures are known worldwide.”

The incident serves as a reminder of the immense risks faced by climbers in some of the most challenging environments on Earth, including the high Himalayas. The loss of life is a sobering reminder of the importance of safety protocols and emergency preparedness.

Purja’s legacy will live on through his remarkable climbing achievements and the countless lives he touched during his time as an adventurer.
