AFC backs UEFA and CONCACAF who plan boycott over FIFA World Cup proposals

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has expressed its strong opposition to plans proposed by global football’s governing body FIFA to sell a stake in the World Cup to private investors. The AFC, which represents 47 member associations from Asia, including countries such as Japan and South Korea, stated that it “stands in solidarity” with regional bodies UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing this proposal.

The AFC expressed its concerns over the proposed establishment of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a $20 billion commercial subsidiary tasked with running the World Cup and other FIFA events. The plan has sparked widespread criticism from football stakeholders worldwide, who argue that it would undermine the integrity and independence of international football.

UEFA, European football’s governing body, voted unanimously on Thursday to boycott all FIFA events unless the plans were dropped. CONCACAF, the regional federation for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, has also rejected FIFA’s proposal. The AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa stated that “the proposed FFE cannot realistically achieve the necessary broad consensus and unity required to move forward.”

The AFC made a thinly veiled attack on UEFA president Gianni Infantino, suggesting that his plan was “totally unacceptable” due to its lack of consultation with all member associations. The AFC also expressed concerns about the governance and institutional processes at FIFA, stating that meaningful democracy is not solely measured by the opportunity for national associations to vote.

The proposed FFE has been met with significant opposition from football stakeholders worldwide, who argue that it would lead to a loss of control over international football events and undermine its global reputation. The AFC’s stance on this issue reflects concerns about the potential consequences of such a proposal, including the erosion of trust in FIFA and the loss of confidence among national associations.

The situation has sparked widespread criticism from football stakeholders worldwide, with many calling for greater transparency and consultation throughout the decision-making process. As one prominent figure put it, “the fact that this issue is entering public discourse should concern everyone who cares about the future of our game.”
