CLIMATE CHANGE AND FOOD SAFETY: A GROWING DISASTER FOR HEALTH AND CHILDREN
Climate change is no longer just an environmental issue. It is now a direct threat to what we eat, how we grow it, and whether our children will grow up healthy. As global temperatures rise and weather becomes unpredictable, Pakistan’s food system is breaking at three points: production, safety, and nutrition. The result is now More hunger, more disease, and a generation of children at risk. Now we are thinking HOW CLIMATE CHANGE IS ATTACKING OUR FOOD. The Crop Failures and Food Shortages
Wheat, rice, and vegetables — Pakistan’s staples — are highly climate sensitive. Heatwaves above 40°C during wheat season cut yields by 10-15%.Erratic monsoons and 2022 floods destroyed 4.4 million acres of crops. Droughts in Balochistan are making it harder to grow fruits and fodder. The UN FAO warns: By 2050, Pakistan’s wheat production could fall by 20% if warming crosses 1.5°C. and we are near to danger but above all we are crossing the limits. Now Food Safety Risks Multiply
Warmer temperatures means more bacteria, toxins, and spoilage. The Heat and humidity increase fungus in wheat, maize, and nuts. Linked to liver cancer in children. Foodborne Diseases like Salmonella, E.coli, and cholera spread faster in floods and contaminated water and Pesticide are more dangerous because we are healing our crops but hurting our future means To fight new pests, farmers use more chemicals. Residues end up in food and milk. The Water Contamination
Floods mix sewage with drinking water and irrigation canals. In Pakistan the 2022 floods led to a 3x spike in waterborne diseases. Our Vegetables irrigated with this water carry the same risk to our plates. Now we are think THE IMPACT ON HEALTH: ESPECIALLY CHILDREN so we can say that the Children are the first and worst victims of “climate + food” disasters because of Malnutrition our Crop loss → food prices rise → the poor families eat less. 40% of children under 5 in Pakistan are already stunted. Climate shocks will make this worse. The Diseases in Contaminated food and water cause diarrhea is now the 2nd leading cause of child deaths in Pakistan. After floods, clinics report 70% more cases. The Heat and Toxic Exposure is worst for the Children working in fields face heatstroke. Many Children eating pesticide-heavy food face long-term damage to brain and immunity. The Mental Health is Losing crops and homes to climate disasters creates food insecurity anxiety in mothers and children. As a UNFCCC accredited journalist, I have seen in COP meetings that “food safety” is now listed as a core climate health risk by WHO. Our country PAKISTAN’S VULNERABILITY is DESASTROUS DISASTERS. Pakistan contributes less than 1% of global carbon emissions but faces 100% of the impact.2022 Super Floods Wiped out food stocks and caused food inflation of 40%. GLOFs in North and Destroy farmland and irrigation channels. Another major strike is Urban Heat which damaged Karachi and Lahore markets see faster food spoilage, more waste. As a country of Livestock we Loss with Heat stress and floods killed millions of animals also reducing milk and meat supply. Now time to think WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN NOW to control FROM DISASTER TO ACTION. We cannot stop all climate change, but we can protect our food and children. For Government & Policy Makers: Climate-Smart Agriculture: Drought-resistant seeds, drip irrigation, and early warning for farmers. Food and the Safety Laws to Test for aflatoxins and pesticide residues. Cold storage chains to prevent spoilage. The Clean Water Separate irrigation and drinking water. Treat flood water before use.For Communities & Parents:Kitchen Gardens: “Go In The Green” at home. Grow vegetables without chemicals. Food Hygiene: Wash, cook properly, and store food safely during heat and floods. Nutrition Education: Promote diverse diets — pulses, dairy, fruits — not just wheat. For International Solidarity:
Pakistan needs climate finance promised in COP21 Paris Agreement to build resilient food systems. Loss and Damage funds must reach farming families.5. CONCLUSION: OUR CHILDREN’S PLATES ARE AT RISK Climate change is contaminating our soil, our water, and our food.
Food insecurity is becoming a health emergency.
And children are paying the highest price. If we don’t act on mitigation — cutting carbon emissions — and adaptation — making food systems safe — then hunger and disease will be the new normal. The solution is simple: Back to Greenery. Protect soil. Protect water. Protect food.
