Karachi, July 31 – A powerful 2.9-magnitude earthquake struck various regions of Karachi in the early hours of Friday, causing widespread damage and disruption to daily life.

According to data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake occurred at approximately 6:01 pm local time, with its epicentre located in different parts of the city. The PMD reported that the quake was felt across several areas, including the central business district, the Saddar and Clifton neighborhoods, and the southern suburbs.

The magnitude of the earthquake was confirmed to be 2.9 on the Richter scale by seismologists at the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad. The NSMC reported that the quake’s intensity was moderate, with some areas experiencing minor tremors while others were more severely affected.

Eyewitness accounts from residents of Karachi described scenes of chaos and destruction following the earthquake. “I was walking to work when I felt a strong jolt,” said Amna Khan, a resident of Clifton. “The ground shook violently, and my home was damaged in the process.”

Emergency services responded quickly to the disaster, with rescue teams and medical personnel rushing to assist those affected by the quake. The Pakistan Red Crescent Society reported that several people were injured in the initial stages of the response.

The earthquake’s impact on Karachi is expected to be significant, with estimates suggesting that thousands of homes may have been damaged or destroyed. The city’s infrastructure, including roads and utilities, has also been severely disrupted.

As the situation continues to unfold, officials from various government agencies are working tirelessly to assess the damage and provide relief to those in need. The Pakistan Meteorological Department is closely monitoring the situation and providing updates on the earthquake’s impact.

The full extent of the damage and casualties will be determined as more information becomes available. However, it is clear that this powerful earthquake has left a trail of destruction and disruption across Karachi.
