Oil tumbles as Trump cancels attack on Iran to reach deal aimed at reopening Hormuz

The ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran have taken a significant turn for oil prices. In response to Trump’s decision to cancel an attack on Iran in favor of reaching a deal aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, oil markets have reacted sharply.

Oil prices plummeted by over $4 per barrel on Monday, with Brent crude futures falling 5.11% to $83.44 and US West Texas Intermediate crude dipping 5.79%. The price drop was driven in part by a surge in demand for oil as the Strait of Hormuz reopened after several days of uncertainty following fighting between the two nations.

The reopening of the strait, which is critical for global oil supplies, has been a major concern for shipping companies and oil producers alike. In recent months, attacks on tankers around Oman have heightened security concerns, deterring shippers from entering the Gulf to load oil. The situation was further exacerbated by reports of vessel attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.

The decision by Trump to cancel an attack on Iran has been seen as a significant shift in US policy towards the region. While it is unclear what specific terms are being included in any potential deal, it is clear that the US is seeking to reduce tensions and avoid another major conflict.

In response to the cancellation of the attack plan, oil prices have fallen sharply. The UK’s Maritime Trade Operations has reported three more tanker attacks since Saturday, adding to concerns about security in the region.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will also be closely watched by Opec+ members, who are seeking to unwind a layer of voluntary output cuts that were implemented at the start of 2022. The decision to approve an oil production quota increase of around 188,000 barrels per day from September has been seen as a positive step towards stabilizing the market.

However, the impact of these developments on global oil prices remains uncertain. Successive monthly Opec+ hikes over most of this year have remained largely on paper due to export disruptions caused by the Iran-Ukraine wars and Russia’s involvement in Ukraine. As such, it is unclear whether any significant price movements will occur as a result of these events.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the situation, oil prices remain at historic lows. The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran have created a volatile market that continues to shape global energy dynamics.
