Renowned mountaineer Nirmal Purja’s life cut short in Broad Peak avalanche

A powerful avalanche struck a British-Nepali climbing expedition to the world’s 12th highest mountain, Broad Peak, on Thursday, claiming the lives of several members. The incident occurred while the team was ascending at an altitude of around 6,600 metres.

According to regional authorities, data from their tracking devices indicates that the climbers were thrown hundreds of meters down the mountainside in a catastrophic event. The remains recovered so far have included an American woman, an Omani woman, and a Nepali man.

The expedition comprised 10 people, including Purja, five Nepalis, a Pakistani, an Omani, an American, and a climber from China. They were last in contact on Thursday morning, with reports emerging that evening of the powerful avalanche.

Naila Kiani, a member of Pakistan’s Alpine Club, described the scene as “chaotic” and said that the climbers’ bodies were scattered across the mountainside. Fida Ali, who worked closely with Purja since 2023, stated that their focus for the climbing season was summiting Broad Peak, but they had first tackled another mountain, G2, in harsh weather.

Ali also joined the expedition to Broad Peak in its initial stages but returned early due to exhaustion. “I wanted to go with him (Purja) but couldn’t and came back with her,” he said. Ali’s experience working with Purja was instrumental in preparing for this climb.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the mountaineering community, with Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah offering his condolences over the “tragic” deaths of Purja and the other climbers. The physical journey of all deceased climbers has been interrupted, but their history as courageous individuals will always remain inspiring.

Rescuers and army helicopters were deployed to scour the area, while teams stayed at the base camp overnight. The rescue operation is being conducted under extremely challenging terrain and high-altitude weather conditions by Pakistani army in coordination with local high-altitude climbers and rescuers.

The avalanche struck on Thursday morning, when the team was ascending at an altitude of around 6,600 metres. Regional authorities have confirmed that the incident occurred while the mountaineers were on a mission to summit Broad Peak (8,047 metres) on Thursday.

Purja’s climbing company, Elite Expeditions, has released a statement confirming his death and expressing their condolences to the families of those who perished. “It is with profound sadness and immense heartbreak that we confirm that Nirmal Purja tragically lost his life following the avalanche on Broad Peak,” it said.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges associated with high-altitude mountaineering, particularly in remote and inhospitable regions like Pakistan’s Karakoram range. The death of this renowned climber highlights the importance of safety protocols and emergency preparedness measures to mitigate such incidents.
