Riyadh Unveils Maritime Alliance as War Spreads
In a significant development, Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for a multinational maritime defense coalition to protect shipping and energy supply routes in the Red Sea region. Participants will discuss increasing threats to maritime security, including attacks on commercial vessels, energy tankers, and maritime infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia has also expressed concerns about a potential escalation of the Middle East conflict, citing growing tensions between Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Iran over the situation in Palestine. The coalition is expected to play a crucial role in addressing these challenges and promoting regional stability.
The announcement comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned that there are “serious escalation” risks if left unchecked, amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Iranian officials have also condemned US strikes on their military command centers and drone facilities, with Iran claiming attacks on US assets in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
As the coalition takes shape, participants will review its draft charter, which outlines the organization’s objectives, principles, and operational arrangements. The signing of a joint statement by 14 participating countries has also been welcomed as a significant step towards establishing a unified maritime defense initiative.
