Saudi Arabia, US carry out strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq

Saudi Arabia and the United States have carried out targeted strikes against Iranian-backed militant groups in Iraq, according to a statement released by the Saudi Ministry of Defence.

The strikes took place early on Wednesday morning, as part of a broader campaign aimed at disrupting Iran’s influence in the region. The Kingdom has long been concerned about the growing presence of these groups, which have been linked to attacks on Saudi and Iraqi territory.

Saudi air defences intercepted several drones launched from Iraqi territory that were carrying out attacks on petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh regions. These drone strikes are seen as a response to recent incidents where Iranian-backed armed groups had attempted to target Saudi interests.

The Kingdom has emphasized its commitment to maintaining regional stability, but also warned against any escalation of tensions with Iran or other hostile actors. The statement concluded by stating that Iraq is committed to preventing Iraqi territory from being used as a route or launching point for attacks targeting brotherly or friendly countries.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi will travel to Saudi Arabia on Thursday in response to the drone attacks, which were ordered by him earlier this week. Al-Zaidi has stated his commitment to investigating these incidents and taking necessary measures to prevent future attacks.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militant groups, has denied any role in the attacks, calling them “fabrications” that will be met with a harsh response from Saudi Arabia.

These strikes are part of a larger campaign by Saudi Arabia and its allies to counter Iran’s growing influence in the region. The situation remains fluid as both sides continue to engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve tensions through dialogue and cooperation.
