A Ten-Member International Mountaineering Team Led by Renowned Nirmal Purja Missing After Avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak

A ten-member international mountaineering team led by renowned Nepal-born former Royal Marine Nirmal Purja is feared missing after an avalanche occurred on Thursday on the 8,047-meter peak of Pakistan’s Broad Peak in the Karakoram range. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of climbers attempting to tackle one of the world’s most challenging mountains.

According to sources close to the team, which includes American climber Alex Honnold, Chinese national Li Mingyu, Omani mountaineer Abdullah Al Hashimi, Nepali guides Rohit Gurung and Tenzin Sherpa, as well as five other climbers from Nepal, the avalanche struck at around midday on Thursday. The exact location of the incident is not publicly disclosed due to security concerns.

Pakistani mountaineering officials have confirmed that no subsequent communication has been received with the team since the incident occurred. An emergency search and rescue operation was launched immediately after the avalanche hit, with a helicopter being deployed if weather permits. The Alpine Club of Pakistan released a statement expressing its concern for the safety and well-being of all climbers involved.

The Broad Peak is widely regarded as one of the most challenging mountains to climb in the world, known for its steep terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. It stands at an impressive 8,047 meters above sea level, ranking it as the 12th highest peak globally. The Alpine Club of Pakistan has been actively engaged with government authorities since Thursday morning to launch a comprehensive search and rescue operation.

The team’s leader, Nirmal Purja, is best known for his record-breaking climb of all 14 eight-thousand-meter mountains in just over six months in 2019. His climbing career began when he walked to Everest base camp in 2012, but instead of returning as planned, he decided to attempt the entire mountain.

Purja’s achievements have earned him widespread recognition and admiration within the mountaineering community. However, his recent disappearance has raised concerns about the safety protocols in place for high-risk expeditions like this one.

The search operation is ongoing, with teams from various countries working together to locate any surviving members of the team. The situation remains dire, and officials are urging climbers to exercise extreme caution when attempting to tackle even the most challenging mountains.

As the search continues, families and loved ones of the missing climbers are left in a state of uncertainty. The Alpine Club of Pakistan has offered its support and solidarity with the international mountaineering community during this difficult time.

The full extent of the situation will be determined as more information becomes available. For now, the world watches anxiously for any updates on the fate of Nirmal Purja’s team.
