The King Moves On: LeBron James Leaves Lakers After Eight Seasons

When the whole world was busy with the Club World Cup 2026, the NBA made a critical move during the offseason. While the biggest names were playing in the tournament, the biggest name in the NBA changed his club. We are talking about LeBron James, who featured for the Los Angeles Lakers for the past eight years. LeBron stepped down and inked a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

For the past eight years at the Lakers, James played a vital role. One of the most iconic moments was winning the title in 2020. In the previous season, he was one of the best players in the playoffs while Luka Dončić was injured. Despite the efforts falling short, the input from LeBron was applauded. Averaging 20.9 points per game during the 2025–26 season was truly remarkable for someone in their 40s.

A Sight on King’s Career

LeBron signed for the Lakers in 2018 from the Cleveland Cavaliers. From the very first season, he played a crucial role, averaging 27.4 points in 55 games. With age, the average points decreased, but the important and crucial points kept coming. During the 2021–22 season, James delivered one of his best performances, averaging 30.3 points in 56 games.

The 2024–25 season was the toughest for the King, while he averaged 25.7 points in 71 games. During the 2025–26 season, at the age of 40, he played 70 games with a crucial average of 24.4 points. This was one of the best performances despite the age factor.

A Potential Role at Philadelphia

LeBron signed a two-year contract worth $8 million. It was the lowest amount of money during his 24-year career outside of his rookie contract. For sure, the age factor is there, but the point-scoring ability is still there. It will be an interesting chapter for James, and somewhere the hunger for another title will light things up.

A potential combination with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and newly acquired Jaylen Brown will bring a massive show for NBA fans. The wait is not much longer, with preseason games scheduled for October 2026. It will be interesting to see one of the biggest stars ever featured in the NBA once again.
