Trump says he is cancelling strikes on Iran subject to “rapidly” making deal

US President Donald Trump has announced that he is cancelling planned strikes against Iran, subject to the successful completion of a deal between the two countries. The decision was made after being assured by Iranian officials and other Middle Eastern leaders that any further attacks would lead to severe consequences.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that his decision had been taken in consultation with Israel, although he did not specify which country’s involvement led him to alter course. He emphasized the importance of holding off on strikes until a deal is reached, suggesting progress towards an agreement has been made.

The US government had previously urged Americans across the Middle East to remain alert and prepared for potential escalation, citing concerns about increased tensions in the region. The security alert issued by the US government stated that “Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance” due to the possibility of further strikes.

Trump’s announcement came amid reports that Washington might have planned new attacks on Iran over the weekend. However, he claimed that his decision was taken after being assured by Iranian officials that a deal would be reached quickly enough to prevent such an outcome.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and is a vital waterway for global oil shipping, has been at the center of tensions between the US and Iran. The two countries have engaged in escalating strikes and counter-strikes since a ceasefire was attempted in April but fell apart in June.

In recent weeks, the US has launched a series of attacks against Iranian targets, including energy infrastructure sites, while also blockading Iranian ports and bombing Iranian sites. Tehran has responded by firing missiles at US assets across the Middle East and targeting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The planned strikes were seen as part of Washington’s efforts to pressure Iran into complying with international demands related to its nuclear program. However, Trump’s decision suggests that any further attacks may be met with severe consequences, including increased military action against Iranian targets.

Iran has not yet responded to Trump’s announcement, but the US government has warned Americans in the Middle East to remain vigilant and prepared for potential escalation. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict.

The deal reached by Iran and other countries is expected to include measures to address concerns about Iranian nuclear capabilities and energy production. However, details of the agreement are still emerging, and it remains unclear what specific concessions will be made in exchange for a ceasefire.
