Trump says Iran talks taking place during pause in US military strikes

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that ongoing talks between the United States and Iran are taking place during a temporary lull in American military strikes against Iranian targets.

The pause in U.S.-led airstrikes began on July 27, following a series of missile attacks by Iran at two Iraqi air bases. The incident prompted the U.S. to launch retaliatory strikes against several Iranian sites, including a key oil refinery and a major rocket factory.

However, talks between Washington and Tehran have resumed, with both sides engaging in diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to their differences. Trump expressed optimism about the prospects for a breakthrough during an interview with Al Jazeera on July 28.

“I believe there is ‘a good chance’ of a breakthrough,” he said. “But if negotiations fail, we will be back to where we were before.”

Trump’s comments came as the U.S. military continues to maintain its presence in the region, with troops stationed at various bases and installations across Iraq and Syria.

The pause in airstrikes has allowed for renewed diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran, which have been engaged in a complex and often contentious relationship over the past year. The two sides have exchanged letters and messages, but no concrete agreements or breakthroughs have been announced.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed optimism about the prospects of talks during an interview with Al Jazeera on July 28. “We are making progress,” he said. “But we need to be patient and persistent in our efforts.”

The U.S.-led coalition has continued to carry out airstrikes against Iranian targets, including a series of attacks on oil tankers and storage facilities in the Gulf region.

Despite the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, Trump’s comments suggest that diplomatic efforts may be yielding results. However, it remains to be seen whether these efforts will ultimately lead to a lasting resolution or if military action will resume as a result of negotiations failing.

The situation continues to unfold with little clear resolution in sight. For now, the U.S.-Iran relationship appears to remain on hold, at least for the time being.
