Trump says he is cancelling strikes on Iran subject to “rapidly” making deal

US President Donald Trump has announced that he is cancelling planned strikes against Iran, subject to the successful completion of a rapid deal between Washington and Tehran. The decision was made during a meeting with US officials, including Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

According to sources close to the White House, Trump had been briefed on the potential for new attacks by Israeli leaders, but ultimately decided not to proceed due to concerns about escalating tensions in the region. In his post on Truth Social, Trump stated that he was “locked and loaded” against Iran until a deal could be reached.

The US has maintained a policy of maximum pressure on Iran, including blockading its ports and bombing Iranian sites, as part of an effort to deter further nuclear activities. However, with the recent failure of talks in April aimed at pausing the war, many analysts believe that Trump’s decision is a significant shift towards diplomacy.

Iranian officials have accused Washington of escalating tensions, while also expressing concern about potential strikes against their country. The US has not yet commented on its plans for future action, but sources close to the administration suggest that any new attacks would be proportionate and targeted.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, is a critical waterway for global oil shipping, with over 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. The US has long sought to control this vital route, citing concerns about Iran’s potential ability to disrupt global energy supplies.

In recent weeks, tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated significantly, including a reported phone call between Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in which he expressed concern about the potential for further strikes against his country. The US has also completed a “heavy wave” of strikes against Iran in retaliation for an attempted ballistic missile attack on American forces.

The deal announced by Trump is expected to include several key concessions, including:

* Immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz and end to Iranian nuclear activities
* Release of any individuals held captive by Iran
* Withdrawal of US troops from Syria

While details are still emerging about the terms of the agreement, many analysts believe that it represents a significant shift towards diplomacy in the region. However, others remain skeptical, arguing that Trump’s decision is too little, too late and may not address the underlying issues driving tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The deal has been hailed by some as a major breakthrough, with Iranian officials expressing relief at the prospect of improved relations with the US. However, others have expressed concerns about the potential for future escalations in the region.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the fate of Iran’s nuclear program and the global economy will be closely watched by policymakers around the world.
