Widespread Rains Expected in Sindh and Karachi by August 2, Experts Warn
A developing weather pattern is expected to bring widespread rains to various regions across Sindh and Karachi, with the potential impact on daily life and infrastructure. The system, which has been tracking over the Bay of Bengal, is predicted to intensify further as it moves towards its projected path.
According to meteorological experts, a low-pressure area is currently situated over the Arabian Sea, where warm air from the Gulf of Oman meets cooler air from the Indian Ocean. This collision of air masses leads to the formation of clouds and precipitation, which will eventually move eastward across Sindh and Karachi.
The National Meteorological Centre (NMC) has issued a weather warning for the region, indicating that heavy rainfall is likely to occur in most parts of Sindh by August 2. The NMC also warned of strong winds, gusty conditions, and isolated thunderstorms during this period.
Sindh’s monsoon season typically runs from June to September, but recent years have seen an increase in extreme weather events due to climate change. In fact, a study published last year found that Sindh experienced its highest number of severe weather-related incidents on record between 2015 and 2020.
Karachi is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of heavy rainfall, with many residents already experiencing flooding issues during previous monsoon seasons. The city’s drainage system has been strained in recent years due to inadequate maintenance and construction delays.
Experts emphasize that while it is difficult to predict exact timing and intensity of the rains, they are confident that a significant amount will be received by August 2. “We’re expecting heavy rainfall across most parts of Sindh and Karachi,” said Dr. Muhammad Ali Khan, Director General of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). “Residents should take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period.”
The PMD has also warned that strong winds and gusty conditions will be a major concern in the region. “We urge people living near rivers and coastal areas to exercise extreme caution when traveling or engaging in outdoor activities,” Dr. Khan added.
As the weather system continues to develop, residents are advised to stay informed through local news channels and government announcements. The PMD has also activated its emergency response plan for severe weather events, which includes mobilizing resources and providing assistance to affected areas.
