Will Saudi Arabia be dragged further into the war in Iran?

The escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran has taken a significant turn, with the latter’s paramilitary group, the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), launching a series of attacks on armed groups within Iraq. The strikes, which were carried out in coordination with US forces, have sparked widespread anger in Iraq, particularly among those who feel that their country is being drawn into the conflict.

The war in Iran has been ongoing for months, with both sides accusing each other of supporting extremist groups and engaging in a proxy war. However, recent developments suggest that tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran are running high. The PMF’s attacks on Iraq have raised concerns about an escalation of violence, which could potentially draw more countries into the conflict.

The US has been actively involved in the conflict, with its military forces conducting strikes against armed groups within Iraq. These strikes were carried out in coordination with Saudi Arabia, and have been widely condemned by human rights organizations. The US claims that it is working to stop Iranian support for extremist groups in the region, but critics argue that this approach has only served to fuel the conflict.

The PMF’s attacks on Iraq are part of a broader campaign to undermine Iran’s influence in the region. The group has been accused of supporting various armed groups, including Shia militias and Kurdish separatists. These groups have been responsible for numerous human rights abuses and violent clashes with rival factions, which have spilled over into neighboring countries.

The Iraqi government has promised to respond to the Saudi attacks, although it is unclear what measures will be taken. The PMF’s leader, Abu Mahdi al-Hashimi Sharif, has vowed to retaliate against Saudi forces, while also warning that Iraq will not back down in its fight for independence and self-determination.

The situation in Iraq remains volatile, with tensions running high between the government and various armed groups. The conflict is likely to have far-reaching consequences, both domestically and internationally. As one expert notes, “the situation is becoming increasingly complex, and it’s difficult to predict what will happen next.”
